SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — A man has been charged with first degree murder following a deadly shooting in downtown Springfield early Saturday morning.
Springfield police officers responded to the 400 block of East Washington Street just before 1 a.m. for reports of a shooting.
When officers arrived, they found a man on the ground who had been shot. He was taken to the hospital, where he died. The victim was later identified as Jayvon Bankhead, 22, of Springfield.
Springfield Police detectives were able to develop and identify a suspect, Christopher M. Coleman, 29, of Springfield.
Coleman was first taken into custody in the 800 block of West North Grand Ave. for an unrelated charge and taken to the Sangamon County Jail. On November 3, the Sangamon County State’s Attorney charged Coleman with first degree murder in connection to the homicide.
He remains in the custody of the Sangamon County Jail.
