SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - If you see a teal ribbon around a tree on the University of Illinois Springfield campus, there's a powerful reason why.

UIS students and staff gathered Thursday to kick off Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

Teal ribbons on trees around campus and informational signs along walkways and in campus buildings raise awareness and support for survivors.

"We want to make sure that the campus [knows] that we exist, that the resources are there, that we are aware of this, especially on a campus community," said UIS Access & Equity Office Peer Educator Evelyn Martinez.

The teal ribbons will stay on campus through the end of April.
