(NBC CHICAGO) - An Illinois sweets company is recalling bags of popular holiday bark sold at beloved grocery stores nationwide because they may contain undeclared allergens that could lead to "life-threatening" allergic reactions if consumed.
The voluntary recall, issued by Silvestri Sweets of Geneva, was issued days before Thanksgiving, according to a release from the Food and Drug Administration. The recall was expanded the day before Christmas Eve, an updated release showed.
The recall impacts 5-ounce bags of two different types of Choceur-branded Holiday Bark. The stand-up pouch bags were sold at Aldi grocery stores across the country, the FDA said.
The two products recalled include Cookie Butter Holiday Bark; and Pecan, Cranberry & Cinnamon Holiday Bark, with lot numbers 28525, 29925 and 30625. The Cookie Butter Holiday Bark had "best by" dates of May and June of 2026, while the cinnamon pouches had "best by" dates of August and September of 2026.
The Cookie Butter Holiday Bark may contain undeclared pecans, the FDA said, and the Pecan, Cranberry & Cinnamon Holiday Bark may contain undeclared wheat.
Those with pecan or wheat allergies run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products, the FDA warned.
The recall was due to a packaging mix-up, with the cinnamon bark placed in cookie butter bark bags, and cookie butter bark placed in cinnamon packages. No illnesses associated with the recall have been reported to date, but consumers who purchased the products are urged to throw them away, the FDA said.
