CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) — A teenager charged after a shooting near the University of Illinois campus last year was sentenced Wednesday.

According to court records, 19-year-old Decoven Stephens pleaded guilty to attempted first degree murder. He was sentenced to 31 years in prison, receiving credit for 197 days served.

The shooting happened in October 2025 near the intersection of Green and Fifth Streets. When they arrived, University of Illinois Police officers found one man who had been shot. He was taken to the hospital, where he recovered.

Days later, police obtained a search warrant for Stephens' home and arrested him. Officers said they found several pieces of evidence, including the handgun used in the shooting.
