Jail Bars With Cell (GG)

CHARLESTON, Ill. (WAND) — An investigation is underway after four separate suicide attempts happened at the Coles County Jail this past weekend.

In a news release Wednesday, the Coles County Sheriff's Office said none of the incarcerated people involved died in the attempts. They were taken to local hospitals and are expected to recover, according to the release.

"The safety and well-being of every individual in our custody is our highest priority," Sheriff Kent Martin said in a statement. "Anytime someone is experiencing a mental health crisis, it is critical that we respond quickly, compassionately, and effectively. I am incredibly proud of our staff for their vigilance and professionalism, which directly contributed to preventing a tragic outcome."

Martin later confirmed to WAND News that the people involved were in separate cell blocks, and the attempts happened at various times over the weekend.

The sheriff's office said it is conducting a review of the incidents.

The Coles County Jail does provide in-house mental health services available to those who request help, according to the news release.

The sheriff's office said jail staff are also trained to identify and refer people who may need additional support.
