SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — Illinois State Police announced all 169 emergency call centers across the state have successfully transitioned to Next Generation 911.
The upgrade replaces the traditional voice-based system with a more advanced, internet-based network designed to improve reliability and response times. The transition began in 2022 and was completed earlier this month.
Officials say the new system allows calls to be routed based on a caller’s exact location instead of nearby cell towers, reducing delays. It also adds backup capabilities, allowing calls to be rerouted during outages or severe weather.
The system supports expanded Text-to-911 services and could eventually allow callers to share photos and video with emergency responders.
State leaders call the upgrade a major step forward in modernizing Illinois’ emergency response system.
